2019 – Experiencing growth

Helifuel are experiencing growth and are increasing the resources to reply to the market requests.

The requests for helicopter refuelling systems, gasoline systems, modifications, service & maintenance services have increased within different industries.

We have since June hired one new employee every month.

In addition to high operational activity we are also working with interesting product developments and we are looking forward to be able to introduce the results from it.

New systems for the US GOM in the design phase.

Helifuel are strongly represented in the US Gulf.

Whilst the BP MD2 projects left the Helifuel yard last week, another 3 new fuelling systems are in the design stage also to be installed on platforms in the US Gulf.

The contracts are signed with major oil companies and all three are specified with high complexity and shall meet the USCG design criteria.

All three systems are planned to be delivered in 2020.

BP MD2 just left the yard

Helifuel have designed, engineered and produced the helicopter refuelling systems that is to be installed on the BP MD2 project in the US GOM.

 

The complete system recently left our yard for its journey first to Samsung in Korea.

The unit will be installed on the platform in the Samsung yard before the  platform will go the US GOM for its final installation.

 

Representatives from BP and Samsung was represented at the final FAT that was performed a few weeks ago. The BP representatives who have experience working with helicopter refuelling systems in the field was very happy with the system and are looking forward to work it in the field.

The system includes large fuel storage capacity and includes a sophisticated control system amongst several other project specific solutions.

New US contracts secured

Helifuel has secured new contracts in the US.

The two contracts are for two different projects being handled in and from the US. Both projects were landed the same week, shortly ahead of the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston.

 

This is good news. We expect the OTC to be busy, but we will definitely find time to celebrate these contracts, said Fergal O’Siochru who spends much time in the US and had arrived Houston again to represent Helifuel at the OTC.

The fueling systems are units that will be specifically designed to meet the US Coast Guard regulations in addition to class regulations as well as client requirements.

 

We are very happy to confirm these contracts. The clients maintain very high standards and the quality requirements are stringent.

The design and engineering work kicks off immediately and the delivery is planned early 2020 and 3rd quarter 2020.

Are you ready for the change?

Announced changes to the  fuel filtration system on helicopter refuelling systems.

 

Why are we sharing this bulletin?

The purpose of this bulletin is to inform current users and purchasers of filter monitor systems, to prepare their aviation refuelling systems for the global changes within the aviation fuelling industry.
Filtration Bulletin EI17/074 issued by Energy Institute states that EI will not be maintaining or updating EI 1583 beyond its current 7th edition and that EI will withdraw the specification by no later than 31st December 2020.
Prior to this date the aviation fuel filtration industry will start the phase out of the filter monitor. To ensure the system can continue to be used beyond 2020, it must be upgraded. This bulletin will strengthen industry wide awareness of the importance of having a compliant helicopter refuelling system prior to the retirement of the EI 1583 specification.

What is the Event that made us publish this?

IATA SAP Special Investment Group has investigated the cases where Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) used in filter monitor has been detected in engine fuel management components. Based on this investigation Energy
Institute issued bulletin EI 17/074 which includes the following statement: “Key industry stakeholders, meeting under the auspices of IATA, have agreed that a transition is required to the global use offiltration/sensing technology that does not contain SAP”.

Based on this the European Aviation Safety Agency has issued EASA SIB No.:2018-10 which states the following Long term (before end of 2020): Replacement of all existing Filter Monitor systems with alternative filtration options, following an extended qualification and field trial programme being undertaken by the industry.” The EI 1583 is the specification for the Filter Monitor
Element, and since this will be withdraw no later than 31st December the helicopter refuelling system owners must start preparing their refuelling system for the new future filtration solution.

What are the recommended corrective Actions?

Action #1: Short term:
Helifuel issued service bulletin 17/01 on the Helifuel website late year 2017 where the short-term recommendations from EI filtration bulletin EI17/074 was addressed. Helifuel stress the importance that instructions within this bulletin are followed to prevent hazardous situations and that this was done before 31
December 2018 as recommended by EI bulletin EI17/074, EASA bulletin SIB 2018-10, JIG bulletin 105 and A4A bulletin 2018.1.

Action #2: Temporary & Long term:
The aviation filtration industry is developing different filtration options, these filtration solutions have not yet passed the field test required by Energy Institute. One filtration option that are under development/testing are dirt defence filter, this filter type does not have water removal capability and must be combined with water sensing technology to confirm that fuel is dry. The dirt filter is soon due for 1-year field test, hence is not yet available.

The second filtration option which is under development is the water barrier filters which continuously remove particle and free water from aviation fuel. This filter technology is still under development and must pass the 1-year field test, hence is not yet available.
For now, there is no replacement filter which has the same functionality as the monitor filter. Helifuel stress the importance of starting the process to replace the Monitor Filter with new filter sensor technology. This is necessary to ensure the solutions are ready and in place when the announced changes by Energy Institute take effect.
The current technical solution from the aviation filtration industry is the water sensor technology. The sensor will monitor free water in your system and will give trend analysis of the refuelling system. This solution is available today. It is recommended to install a water sensor upstream of existing monitor filter vessel to monitor the trend of free water in the Helicopter refuelling system. Based on the findings provided by the sensor the optimal and most economical filtration solution can be selected for your future rebuilt helicopter refuelling system.
For those helicopter refuelling systems which have 3-stage filter vessels, Helifuel stress the importance thatthe differential pressure over the filter monitor is monitored. The quantity of water in your refuelling system can be analysed though the filter monitor differential pressure log, based on this log, future filtration solution can be evaluated. On a Helicopter refuelling system with 3-stage filter vessels which has negligible changes in the filter monitor differential pressure log, there is an optionto rebuild the 3-stage filter vessel from a 3-stage to a 2-stage filter water separator by removing the filter monitor element function from the vessel. This requires the vessel to be rebuilt and a new data plate fitted. If this solution is selected a water sensor must be installed downstream of the filter water separator to monitor water contamination. To prevent high water contaminated fuel entering the aircraft the electrical circuit must be upgraded with an PLC which can give alarm or ultimately shut down the helicopter refuelling system if high water contamination is detected.

Managing Director met with the Crown Prince of Norway

Helifuel’s Managing Director Jorunn Håvardsholm was honoured to meet his Royal Highness of Norway at a conference earlier this month. The Conference was one of Norway’s traditional annual gatherings hosted by the employer organization NHO. The conference saw business managers, politicians, journalists and other global key players gathered to discuss Norway’s position in a global perspective.

The honourable lunch meeting facilitated the Crown Prince in meeting representatives for small and medium sized companies who play large and important roles for the value creation in Norway. 99% of the Norwegian companies are small and medium sized and are responsible for close to half of the value creation in the country.

The Crown Prince was interested to learn more about the Helifuel company, and the challenges and the markets in which we operate. We are pleased that the Crown Prince shows such interest in small and medium sized companies and appreciates their value,  says Jorunn Håvardsholm.

Three ISO standard certifications completed

Helifuel has just received the DNV certificate stating that Helifuel maintains a HSE management system in accordance with the newest ISO 45001:2018 standard.

The ISO 45001:2018 is replacing the OHSAS 18001.

Helifuel is certified to the ISO standards for Quality 9001, Environment 14001 and HSE 45001.

 

The ISO standards are the basis for the Helifuel work philosophy and we find it very valuable for all parts of the organization, says Managing Director Jorunn Håvardsholm.

 

Safety and Quality are of outmost importance for both for Helifuel and our clients and have been of focused attention for a long time.
Over time the Aviation and Maritime industries have improved safety through shared experienced within this field. Furthermore the ISO certification processes are ensuring continuous improvements which is of benefit to all.

Whilst the global environmental challenges are the subject of increased focus,  Helifuel’s commitment to continuous improvement is reflected by increased investment in our management systems within this area.

The certificates have been awarded to Helifuel by DNV-GL who is one of the main global players within this field.

Another US GOM contract secured

Helifuel AS has once again secured a major contract in the United States. Helifuel will supply the helicopter refueling system to the BP Mad Dog 2 project. This new contract is a welcome addition to other work Helifuel has secured recently. The increased orderbook allowed Helifuel to increase its workforce with a number of new appointments.

BP Mad Dog Phase 2 is an extension of BP’s largest oil discovery in the Gulf of Mexico. Phase two entails an integrated semi-submersible, which will be equipped with a helicopter refuelling system designed and manufactured in Sveio, Norway.

The helicopter refuelling system will be delivered in the autumn of 2018 and is purchased by Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea on behalf of BP.

“It’s a very engineering-demanding project and it is very good to see that we secure these complex projects. A good understanding of the American market is required here. Over the years, we have established a strong position in the US after delivering a number of systems to this continent” says Managing Director, Jorunn Håvardsholm.

Helifuel delivered a similar project to Shell Appomattox at the end of 2016. Helifuel has earlier also delivered to Shell Mars B.

“The mentioned projects are distinctive in terms of complying with US regulations. In addition, the oil companies have thousands of pages of specifications to be followed. Helifuel’s primary focus is on safety and through quality and monitoring procedure, the projects are delivered to the most stringent specifications and safety standards.

“We have also delivered many projects to Samsung during the years and it is a pleasure to cooperate with them once again. Both the owner BP, and shipyard Samsung are strong and highly professional players in this field. Close cooperation contributes to mutual development.”

Design is well underway and the kick-off meeting in Korea has been completed. Helifuel is preparing for Hazop.

Helifuel system to the REV research and exploration vessel

Helifuel AS has secured a contract to deliver a helicopter refuelling system to the REV research vessel designed by Vard Ship Design.

The research vessel will not only be the world’s most advanced, it will also be built according to passenger ship rules. With a crew of 30 and accommodating 60 researchers, emphasis is placed on comfort and good research.

The ship will be 181m long and 22m wide and will involve state of the art equipment.

The ship will have equipment for measurements in both the atmosphere and below the surface, down to 6,000 meters depth.
I will also be able to collect and burn plastic waste from the ocean.

The Norwegian investor Kjell Inge Røkke is financing the ship and its operations in co-operation with World Wide Fund for nature (WWF) (www.tu.no)

The helicopter refuelling system will be delivered to Vard Ship Design in 2019.

From the experience gained Helifuel is confident that our system for the REV will conform to requirements for this ship.” says Managing Director, Jorunn Håvardsholm.
